Enrichment Classes – Winter 2014

Enrichment Class Schedule – Winter 2014

Woodshop

Instructor: Ansel Schmidt

Here in the woodshop we let the students take the lead, designing and building individual or group projects ranging from simple to complex. The results are often unique and always empowering. We teach safe techniques of basic woodworking and let our students’ imaginations soar! It’s fun, challenging, and inspiring. Students may only sign up for one day each week unless maximum enrollment is not met.

Knitting

Instructor: Julee Lee – K/1 Teaching Assistant

K/1 Class: In this class, we will finger knit (where children use their fingers as needles) and make long scarves. We will also learn to knit ropes with our arms. This is a great kinesthetic way to learn the basic mechanics of knitting. We will also explore hoop knitting and making different knitting structures with recycled materials.

2-5 Class: Our knitting class will start with making our own knitting needles. From there, kids will choose a yarn color and learn how to cast-on and some basic stitches. Some projects we will do are wristbands, fingerless gloves, a scarf or cowl neck and maybe a bag. For kids coming in with basic skills, we will learn to do more advanced techniques such as ribbing, cables, decreasing and increasing stitches and other techniques in which children might be interested.

Circus Moves

Instructor: Cynthia Rauschert

Daredevil Circus! Dare yourself out of the winter doldrums with a circus adventure! From balance boards and circus globes to stilts and unicycle to partner acrobatics and tumbling, each class offers breathtaking opportunities to explore the unique physical and creative skills of circus artistry. All that “balanced” with a healthy dose of physical comedy and games will keep you laughing all the way home. No experience necessary. Visit the Circus Moves website for more information.

Toyology: Science Through Toys

Instructor: Sarah’s Science Camp

In these exciting hands-on science classes we will build a variety of toys and use them to demonstrate major scientific concepts such as energy, electricity, light, gravity, motion, friction, magnetism and simple machines. Each student will construct and take home a science toy in every class. Toys include: Light-Up Conductivity Tester, Air Cannon, Straw Thaumatrope, Spool Racer, Magnetic Gaussian Roller Coaster, Balance Bot, and more . . .

Aurora Chorus for 2nd – 5th grade ONLY

Instructor: Eve Decker, Aurora’s Music Specialist

Kids will learn a repertoire of songs from different traditions designed to feature harmonies, rounds, and small group singing. Guaranteed fun and learning. We will showcase what we have learned at the Tuesday morning assembly on April 1st. If you like singing this is the place for you.
