Enrichment Classes – Winter 2013

Enrichment Classes at Aurora offer students a chance to explore a topic in depth after school right here on the Aurora campus. Classes are offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring. Each class meets weekly after school for 8 weeks. Students may sign up for Enrichment Classes whether or not they participate in our Extended Care program. There is an additional cost to participate in Enrichment Classes.

Woodshop

Mondays – 7 weeks
Wednesdays – 8 Weeks

Instructor: Alex Vittum, Aurora’s Woodshop Specialist

Here in the Woodshop we work on individual or group projects ranging from very simple to abstract inventions all while learning basic tools and methods in woodworking. It’s fun, challenging, and inspiring. Students may only sign up for one day per week, if one class does not reach max enrollment, we will open it up to students enrolled in the other day.

  • Yoga

    Mondays – 7 weeks
    Jan 28 – Mar 18 (No class Feb 18)
    Instructor: Anja Borgstrom

    Become focused, flexible, and strong! Explore yoga through themes such as travel, the elements, the seasons, story-telling, plants and animals. We will practice yoga asana (postures), meditation, chanting, affirmation, and rest, with sensitivity to age-appropriate levels. The 2-5 group will be taught longer holds in asana and in meditation and more intricate chants. Anja Borgstrom has been teaching yoga since 1994, and specializing in yoga for children since 2009. She graduated from a 2-year teacher training program in the Iyengar tradition at the Yoga Room in 1996. Anja is inspired by the enthusiasm, energy, and creativity of her young students.

  • Books, Boxes, Beads (& a Bag!) with Linda Lemon

    Tuesdays – 8 weeks
    Jan 29 – Mar 26 (No class Feb 19)

    Instructor: Linda Lemon

    In this class we’ll make several types of books and boxes, constructing and embellishing, using a wide variety of materials. We’ll use polymer clay to make beads, small sculptures and embellishments. Each student will make only one bag, to be used to hold the deck of Artist Trading Cards they’ll make.

  • Skilly Circus – Circus Arts for K/1

    Tuesdays – 8 Weeks
    Jan 29 – Mar 26 (No class Feb 19)

    Instructor: Cynthia Rauschert, Head Coach and Director

    Imaginations soar and bodies explore in this exciting developmental circus extravaganza. Each class begins with a fun warm-up, stretching, and a basic exploration of tumbling/acrobatics before moving on to using the equipment. Equipment skills include juggling/object manipulation, and equilibristics: rola bola, globe, partner balance. Class closes with clowning and improv games. Come play circus with us!   • Skilly Circus – Peg Leg Gymnastics for 4/5 (& exp 3rd graders)

    Tuesdays – 8 Weeks

    Instructor: Cynthia Rauschert, Head Coach and Director

    This unique class is focused on peg-stilt acrobatic balance and skill development. Students practice ground techniques including yoga poses, inversions, getting up and down, shapes, tumbling, and more. Standing techniques focus on synchronized movement, choreography, dance, and navigating a variety of obstacles and terrains. Each class begins with proper falling and safety techniques before students strap in and stand up and finishes with spotted falling onto mats. Stilts are provided, students must bring knee pads. Class is open to 4th and 5th graders, and 3rd graders who have participated in Skilly Circus either in the Spring or Fall 2012 sessions.   • Art with Aliea – Drawing Animals!

    Wednesdays – 8 Weeks
    Jan 30 – Mar 27 (No class Feb 20)
    Instructor: Aliea Wallace, Fine Artist and Art Instructor

    Come and learn how to draw our furry and sometimes slimy friends – animals! We will have lots of fun learning how to draw the different textures, patterns and proportions of animals from all over the world. All projects are step-by-step guided in a non-competitive atmosphere. Most lessons are taught in a realistic style with lots of room for creative alterations. Aliea has been teaching art to students of all ages for over seven years, and holds a B.F.A. in Painting. For student artwork examples and more info please visit her website at www.aliea.com.   • Aurora Chorus with Eve

    Thursdays – 8 Weeks
 (2nd – 5th grade only)
    Jan 31 – Mar 28 (No class Feb 21)
    Instructor: Eve Decker, Aurora’s Music Specialist

    Kids will learn a repertoire of songs from different traditions designed to feature harmonies, rounds, and small group singing. Guaranteed fun and learning. We will offer two performances of our pieces at the end of the eight weeks – one in a Tuesday morning assembly and one at 4:30 pm for parents. If you like singing this is the place for you 🙂
