Transitional Kindergarten
Our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom serves as a one-year bridge between preschool and kindergarten, providing a relationship-driven, play-based program. Children engage in dynamic educational experiences that emerge from their interests and meet the unique needs of four-year-olds.
Aurora School has entered a partnership with the community of Mills College Children’s School (MCCS), bringing their Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program to Aurora's campus in Fall 2026.
Our TK classroom is staffed by a lead teacher and support teacher. Students also take specialist classes in art, Spanish, music, PE, and woodworking; and enjoy time in the Play Yard, Greenspace, and Garden Forest on Aurora’s historic campus. The curriculum infuses experiences with language & literacy, math, science, and the arts. Topics of study include our community, our environment, and how things work. Students explore the world around them through relationship- and play-based structured activities. Â
We also emphasize community-building beyond the classroom. As children learn more about themselves, their communities, and their social interactions, they develop a stronger sense of their own identity and sense of agency in the context of larger groups. Provides a strong entry point for the continuum of joyful, rigorous education at Aurora through eighth grade.
We believe that learning to work and play together is an essential skill for children who are getting ready for kindergarten, so we emphasize community building within and beyond our classroom. By collaborating with other classrooms throughout the school, our children get to be leaders and collaborators with both younger and older students. As children learn more about themselves, their communities, and their social interactions with others, they develop a stronger sense of their own self-identity and sense of agency in the context of a larger group.
