At Aurora School, we believe that a truly impactful education nurtures the whole child, sparking creativity, fostering critical thinking, and cultivating skills that prepare students for everything life has to offer. Our robust specialist program exposes students to a wide range of topics that encourage movement, thinking, and creativity. A well-rounded education isn't just about exposure to various subjects—it's about helping students develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Aurora's specialist programs are designed with this philosophy, offering hands-on learning experiences that ignite curiosity and inspire growth.
The Power of a Well-Rounded Education
Studies consistently highlight the importance of a well-rounded education in preparing students for the challenges of the modern world. According to research by the Brookings Institution, engagement in arts education correlates with improved academic performance, enhanced social skills, and greater emotional well-being. Similarly, the National Center for Education Statistics found that participation in extracurricular activities significantly boosts school engagement and reduces the likelihood of academic failure. Students who might be challenged academically often excel in areas like athletics or music, so having these programs gives them a space to shine and increases confidence.
Our team of specialists works with students throughout their years at Aurora, building bonds and helping them grow.
Art
Aurora's art program is multidisciplinary, students explore their creativity and self-expression while developing fine motor skills and visual-spatial awareness. Projects are often aligned with subjects of classroom study. Our Art Specialist Julie has a well-stocked art room where students explore drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and more, all of which is on display at our annual year-end art show. Whether painting, sculpting, or experimenting with mixed media, students learn to see the world through an artistic lens.
Woodshop
Woodshop introduces students to practical craftwork, teaching them how to conceptualize, plan, and execute projects. This hands-on experience builds problem-solving abilities, perseverance, and a sense of accomplishment. I work with kids year after year and watch them grow,” Casey says. “And you can see them reach the point where they really don’t need me as much, just an occasional hint here and there about how to approach a problem.”
Music
Music education enhances auditory skills, pattern recognition, and discipline. Our Music Specialist Moisés starts K/1 students with singing and percussion. In later grades students learn more about rhythm and music theory and pick up instruments including recorders and xylophones. Middle schoolers choose an instrument to learn for band.
Spanish
Learning Spanish in elementary and middle school enriches students' intellectual development, prepares them for future opportunities, and helps cultivate a greater appreciation for cultural diversity. It offers a strong foundation for lifelong learning and opens up a world of possibilities for personal, academic, and professional growth. As a native Spanish speaker, Moisés brings a special understanding to the challenge of learning a new language, and he often incorporates music and culture in his instruction so students can see how it connects to the real world.
Physical Education
Our PE Speciaist Otillia is a fitness enthusiast and hoop performer who brings a wide range of sports and activities targeted to the needs of each age group. For younger students activities are focused on helping develop motor skills and coordination. As they grow and become more confident in their bodies they engage in various sports, including basketball, volleyball, hockey, and lacrosse (to name a few). And she plans to introduce badminton, baseball, and football.
Impact on Students
By engaging in these disciplines, students develop resilience, creativity, and interpersonal skills and experience significant personal growth—essential for navigating academic and personal challenges.
"Our specialist programs are a cornerstone of Aurora's educational philosophy," says Abbie Koss, Head of School. "By giving students the chance to explore art, music, woodshop, Spanish, and more, we're not only fostering their individual talents but also equipping them with the skills to think critically, work collaboratively, and contribute meaningfully to their communities."
